"75th Anniversary Regatta"
The Snipe Class celebrated its 75th anniversary this weekend with a special Friday afternoon of racing to coincide with the NW Championship held at Budworth SC. The Fridays racing focussed on the “serious fun” part of the Snipe motto whilst the “serious sailing” was left for the main event.
The wind was light and from the south west, which is not the best direction for the lake. The windward legs were quite short but tested all the crews as there were large shifts to take advantage of. The race committee made the most of the lake and set good courses throughout the weekend.
All of the races were closely fought and the positions changed frequently in the shifty conditions. In most races the winner was still not decided until the very last moments of the race. The close competition was seen through out the fleet during the whole of the weekend. There were many personal battles to be seen with lots of close tactical racing which the Snipe is renowned for.
However the top of the fleet was dominated by Mark Antonelli and Susan Robertson, Iain and Richard Marshall, Alan Williams and Liz Crouch and Bill Kenyon and Ben Ditchburn, who were making a guest appearance from the local GP14 fleet.
The overall winner was not decided until the last race. Local junior sailor Will Williams crewed by his dad Steve, had a great start and lead the top sailors for a good part of the race. However, they were eventually overhauled by Alan and Liz and Iain and Richard, who eventually finished 1st and 2nd in the race. Mark and Susan were unlucky on some shifts and never quite got back in the running in the last race, making Alan and Liz the regatta winners.
